The UNESCO Chair in "Early Childhood Education and Development" is an active participant in the All-Russian Longitudinal Childhood Research Project «Growing Together.» This is the first large-scale longitudinal childhood research project in Russia. Its goal, based on a scientific approach and objective data, is to ensure the maximum development of each child's potential, taking into account the cultural diversity of our country.
Our project aims to develop a holistic understanding of modern childhood, which will enable the development of effective strategies to support children's comprehensive development. We are confident that our research findings will be useful for both education professionals and parents seeking to create the best conditions for their children.
Research Results:
1. The influence of regional characteristics on the development of value orientations in preschool children.
The study was conducted by a group of preschool education researchers from the UNESCO Chair in Early Childhood Education and Development, the Russian Presidential Academy of National Economy and Public Administration, and the Analytical Center under the Government of the Russian Federation.
The study's objective was to obtain a realistic picture of the current state of moral and civic values education in preschool-aged children; to understand which values adults—teachers and parents—consider most important for the development of a child's personality; and to understand the mechanism for transmitting moral values to children.
The results can be found in the article «Karakchieva I.V., Kisel A.V., Novikova S.E., Sizova M.A., Tishchenko A.S. Preschool education today: needs and values».
2. The impact of digitalization on the development and education of preschool-age children.
The study was conducted jointly with researchers from the Faculty of Psychology at Lomonosov Moscow State University and the Federal Scientific Center for Psychological and Interdisciplinary Research.
Objective. To study how digital technologies influence development and change the role of play and children's interactions with the world around them.
Results. A parent survey revealed that the average screen time for preschoolers in Russia is 26 hours per week, with regional variations (from 14 hours in Moscow to 30 hours in Yakutia). These data highlight the importance of monitoring screen time and its impact on children's development. The results can be found in «Key Findings of the All-Russian Longitudinal Childhood Research Project "Growing Together"» (pp. 37-40).
